Treat Your House Like Your Business
The same keys that unlock business success, can help make housework much more manageable!
First up, I just want to get one thing straight: I’m not being sexist and saying that women do all the housework! Whether you’re married, single, or in a partnership where chores are shared – managing a household while running a business is an outright juggling act.
But here’s an approach I’ve found to be rather effective with staying on top of things at home: Treat your house like a business.
What do I mean by this? When you’re running a business, you know that having the right equipment, streamlining processes, and outsourcing when necessary are key to success. So why not apply the same principles to your home?
Here’s how to do it:
1 – Set yourself up with the right equipment
You wouldn’t run your business without the right tools, and your home deserves the same respect. Investing in quality household equipment will save you time and hassle in the long run. Consider, for example:
- A high quality, time saving robot vacuum. Let technology work on cleaning those floors while you take care of business!
- Installing a frameless shower screen – an absolute game changer. Sleek, modern, and no pesky nooks and crannies for mould and gunk to hide. Simply wipe and you’re done.
- A thermomix and slow cooker to get those meals and snacks virtually taking care of themselves. No more hangry family while you scramble to scrape something together last minute!
2 – Streamline your processes
Streamlined processes are the cornerstone of any successful business – and your home should be no different. Creating routines and systems can help keep things running smoothly without you having to think about it.
- Develop a weekly and monthly cleaning schedule. The secret? Break tasks into manageable chunks instead of having it take up your entire weekend. Sayonara, overwhelm!
- Batch tasks. Just like you might batch similar tasks in your business to save time, do the same at home. For example, do all your meal prep for the week in one go, do your laundry on one day, or designate a specific day for deep cleaning different areas of your home.
- Simplify your space. Decluttering isn’t just a trend – it’s a necessity. Keep only what you need and use regularly. Less stuff means less to clean and organise, making your home easier to maintain.
3 – Outsource where necessary
In business, you know you can’t do it all, and the same goes at home. Sometimes it just makes sense to outsource certain tasks so you can focus on what you do best.
- Hire help. If your budget allows, consider hiring a cleaner for those deep cleaning tasks that take up too much of your time. The same goes for gardening. Even having someone come in once a month can make a huge difference.
- Utilise technology. Leverage smart home devices to take some of the load off. Amazon Echo (Alexa), Google Home, and Apple HomePod can help you control other smart devices, set reminders, create shopping lists, play music, provide weather updates, and more, all through voice commands. There are even smart fridges that can help you keep track of groceries!
- Delegate chores. If you live with others, share the load. Create a chore chart or use apps like OurHome to assign tasks and keep everyone accountable.
Treating your home like a business isn’t about adding more to your plate. It’s about working smarter, not harder. By investing in the right equipment, streamlining your processes, and outsourcing when necessary, you CAN maintain a beautiful, clean home without sacrificing your time or sanity!
