The power of knowing your ‘why’ in business – with Kelli Martin
In the world of business, there's a common belief that the most important question you can ask yourself is not "what" or "how," but rather "why."
This simple yet profound question has the power to shape the very essence of your entrepreneurial journey and pave the way for building a successful business. Understanding your “why” goes beyond identifying a product or service you want to offer; it delves into the core purpose and driving force behind your entrepreneurial pursuits.
One individual who embodies this belief is Brisbane trailblazer Kelli Martin, Managing Partner, KLM Solicitors. In just eight years, she has transformed KLM Solicitors into a respected mid-tier law firm specialising in criminal and family law, as well as domestic violence matters.
In Episode Ten of the WNA Trailblazers podcast, Kelli shares her insights on how knowing your “why” is crucial to establishing a successful business. She speaks of the tremendous benefits she has experienced by aligning her values, purpose, and ultimately her WHY.
Back in 2015, Kelli decided to start her own business, to go it alone and do law differently. The journey was not without its challenges, but along the way, Kelli discovered the significance of finding one’s “why.”
For Kelli, her “why” is deeply ingrained in KLM Solicitors’ mission of enhancing access to justice for all, particularly women and children. Witnessing the impact of domestic violence on the community, Kelli recognised the crucial need for increased support on a broader scale.
“That’s why I established KLM Solicitors eight years ago. I didn’t anticipate its rapid growth, but I now realise that it stemmed from my understanding of WHY I pursued this path,” says Kelli.
Knowing your why
Understanding your why is a game changer. For Kelli, it has become the differentiating factor between KLM Solicitors and other firms. Kelli explains that she doesn’t sell what she does; she sells why she does it. This distinction yields significant advantages and extends across all industries.
There will sometimes be individuals attempting to impede your progress. It is vital to remain focussed on why you are pursuing your chosen path so that you can effectively drown out these detractors. When you possess a firm grasp of your purpose, external opinions hold little sway.
“Personally, I experienced a negative situation in my previous job, where individuals actively worked against my success. However, the moment I recognised that I could disregard the surrounding noise and focus solely on my personal motivations, everything changed,” says Kelli.
The power of alignment: surrounding yourself with a purpose-driven network
Surrounding yourself with individuals who align with your “why” and understand your vision is crucial for building a successful business. The support and synergy derived from such a team can be transformative. When everyone shares a common purpose, the journey becomes more fulfilling and the collective drive intensifies.
“I have been fortunate to have an incredibly supportive team that wholeheartedly embraces my vision for KLM Solicitors. Their enthusiasm for our growth has been truly inspiring. What has truly worked is my approach of leading from within, not above. I’ve encouraged my team to actively contribute to our growth, seeking their advice along the way. Together, we’ve created an environment where it’s about us and not just me. It’s this collaborative mindset that has propelled our success,” says Kelli.
Maintaining authenticity
Every individual and business will have unique circumstances, goals and values. When you compare yourself to others, you risk losing sight of your authenticity. Each person’s journey is shaped by different experiences, skills and opportunities. By staying in your own lane, you can focus on developing your strengths, refining your offerings and remaining true to your vision.
“Never compare yourself to anyone else. Do what is right for you, your life and your children. Comparisons can be a dangerous game. What works for me may not work for others. Everyone has their role in society. Embrace your unique path,” says Kelli.
