Have Confidence In Your Own Abilities

Public Relations & Media Services

Recently I finished up from a 3 month contract in the property industry, more precisely, the land lease community living industry, in my home town of Port Macquarie on the beautiful mid north coast of NSW.

I was fortunate to be offered the position courtesy of a recommendation by a friend and business associate, who knows me from a totally different field.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I was “cut out” for the position. However, with my friend’s belief in me, I didn’t want to let her…my Mum…my family…or myself down.

Sadly, my beautiful 88 year old Mum, who had been admitted to hospital 6 weeks prior, passed away THE DAY before I started my new contract.

So what has this got to do with public speaking you may be thinking.

It has everything to do with it.

To be successful as a public speaker you need to have a laser focus and be disciplined. You have to believe in yourself and what you are doing. Others may believe in you before you do, so borrow their belief.

I knew a little about the property market, buying and selling homes and land lease community living (thanks to Mum living in such a community). But, I learnt along the way; I asked questions and I was humble enough to know that I certainly had lots to learn. But in saying that, I am also passionate about both people and property and my honesty, friendliness and willingness to learn got me through. In fact, in my 3 months, I actually secured 2 sales in the community.

Relating this to public speaking again, be prepared to listen, learn, ask questions and always be humble. Know what your client, i.e. your audience wants to hear, not what you want them to hear. They are investing their precious time and often money with you to hear a nominated topic, so make sure you deliver.

Selling homes, public speaking and business in general is all about relationships and being relatable. So be interested in, not interesting, to others and the “transaction” or connection will follow.
