Networking Success – What Vibe Are You Sending?
Do you feel uncomfortable when networking? Do you feel nervous or unsure?
If you are an extrovert you most probably thinking no I love to talk to people. However, there are many that would say yes to those questions – especially introverts.
Unfortunately, one of the byproducts of being nervous and uncomfortable is that you may give the impression that you are unapproachable. You may be putting up an unconscious barrier, which is fostering a perception to the other attendees that you don’t’ want to interact because you aren’t interested in them.
This could trigger a self-perpetuating circle of uncomfortable vibes – neither person wanting to move first.
Adopting the following suggestions will help break that circle and shift the focus to what networking is really all about – building relationship, getting to know people.
Body language
Be aware of your body language – people more often take their cues from the non-verbal, especially if it doesn’t match your words. If you keep your arms crossed – shoulders hunched or chin down you are almost certainly giving the impression that you don’t want to interact, you may even appear unfriendly.
Adjusting your body language may seem simple but you’d be surprised at how approachable it makes you look.

Don’t wait around for someone else to start a conversation with you. Even extroverts can be nervous in social situations so take a deep breath and say hello. Start a conversation – introduce yourself, ask questions about their business, the event, what is currently happening Remember others are probably as nervous as you and will be delighted to have you come over and start talking.
You may feel awkward and nervous when you’re in a conversation with someone you don’t know. It can be tempting to use one word answers or just nod along as the other person does all the talking. Take a deep breath and start to participate in the conversation – try and give more than one word answers. Expand on your answer – if someone asks what you do, don’t answer, “I’m a book keeper.” Instead try something like, “I help small tradie businesses with their books helping them to be time efficient and letting them concentrate on their business.
It’s normal to feel a bit uncomfortable at a networking event, especially if you’re an introvert. But don’t let that stop you building relationships and having a good time. Be aware of the vibes you are giving off, be ready to connect and have a conversation. If you see someone alone, don’t be afraid to start a conversation with them.
